Data Sources and International Transfers

Where our information comes from, how it is handled, and how it moves between countries.

Last updated: 15 October 2026

Where information comes from

  • Public and official records: company registries, courts, property and other registers, official gazettes.
  • Published material: news, public statements, corporate and professional publications.
  • Licensed databases: third-party services used under their own terms.
  • Local document retrieval: certified copies and records obtained from the relevant office.
  • Human sources: informed people consulted through structured enquiries.
  • Field observation: what can be seen at a place, on a date.

Limits of each source

Access and permitted reuse depend on the registry, authority, database and licence terms. Each source has its own error rate and coverage gaps, which is why we compare independent channels where feasible and state what could not be verified.

Protecting sources

We assess the reliability and motives of human sources, protect their identity in client deliverables as appropriate, and do not use methods that are unlawful or that we could not defend.

Personal data in investigations

Investigations can involve personal data of people other than the client. We check for a lawful purpose before accepting a matter, limit collection to what the question requires, restrict access to the team working on it, and handle the data under the engagement terms and the rules that apply to that information.

International transfers

ISSLA RISK is based in the United States and works with investigators and analysts in several countries, and clients may be located elsewhere. Information may therefore be accessed or stored in a country different from the one where it was collected. Each transfer or remote access is assessed separately, considering the receiving country, the service providers involved and the safeguards that apply, such as contractual confidentiality, minimum necessary access and, where required, recognised transfer mechanisms.
